Mentorship is an integral part of your military transition. Coming from the military, you have likely had numerous mentors. They have helped you grow and succeed in your military career. You may even have mentors outside of the military. Now, it is time to gain even more mentors.
You should focus on gaining mentors that can provide different benefits to you. This includes multiple "personas." Find a mentor in the job field you're pursuing. A mentor who knows LinkedIn, Resume Writing, and Interviewing. A mentor you know who also got out of the military and may have had a similar career to yours.
Don't limit yourself to just these personas. Sit down, and list what you need to understand or receive help with. Find mentors that can guide you in these areas.
Do mock interviews with your mentors. Have them chop your resume and cover letters and bounce your civilian job offers off them. Listen to their stories and recommendations.
Ask them what certifications you should get and what skills you should focus on.
Veterans have many mentorship resources you can search for mentors on and begin these meaningful relationships.
See someone on LinkedIn? Reach out to them. Don't be afraid to put yourself out there and start networking.
